Migratory Birds on Tuesday 17/9, as we were flying over Athens we paid a visit to the lovely and welcoming cafe of Schedia “Home”. There we had the honor to attend the official appearance of the National Homeless Team that will represent Greece at the Homeless World Cup in the capital of South Korea 21/9-28/9/2024!
Soccer gave the opportunity for people who have been lost and tested, to break free and truly care about something. We heard some of the stories of people who are now part of the soccer team. How much their lives have changed just by kicking a ball! But that ball made them part of a bigger whole and brought people around them who supported them every step of the way.
Next, we met the South Korean Ambassador, who said he was ready to warmly welcome the Greek National Homeless Team to Seoul and who promised them a tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace! Each member of the team also received a sweet gift, a Korean cookie and a Korean beverage with genseng and Greek honey.
The walls of the cafe, Schedia “Home” are adorned with Michael Kountouris‘ imaginative cartoons with the theme: “The ball of solidarity”. Sketches that will surely form a smile on the face of every young or old person who looks at them.
The end of the event came, but we could not leave without trying the new alchemy of the cafeteria, the finger food!
Schedia Home is a corner of Athens that overflows with kindness and concern for the fellow human being who is struggling and needs a shoulder to lean on. So, the next time you find yourself near Monastiraki, you too can “fly” to 56 Kolokotronis Street, have a delicious coffee and be impressed by the rich history that adorns the walls of the café.
