How can we talk about progress when the Earth is crying out for help? We have noticed that the change in the environment due to the climate crisis is great. We need to face the problem and pay more attention to it. Extreme weather has become our new reality, with summer in December and winter in July. You wake up in the morning, look outside, and you don’t know what to wear. Rain, sun, cold – all in one day. These changes are not random. They are the result of the climate crisis, a catastrophe that we ourselves have caused and can no longer ignore. For example, now in December, when we should be wearing jackets, sweaters, scarves and gloves, we are instead wearing our summer clothes because the weather is still warm.
My school, the 4th General Lyceum of Athens “Manolis Glezos”, participated in a project called “green roof”. It is known that plants play a big role in our lives, which is why we have to take care of them. If, for example, we cut down one tree, we must then plant two, so that the environment continues to be in good condition. Nowadays, the environment has been destroyed by litter in the water, on the streets and everywhere around us. In addition, the water and air have been polluted by factory fumes. Furthermore, when there is an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the heat of the sun rises dramatically. For all of the above, factories are largely responsible.
To tackle the climate crisis, it is important to take action on a daily level. Even as students, we can make a significant contribution. For example, we can participate in programs such as Action for Climate, which promotes active student involvement in environmental initiatives, such as creating green spaces and promoting sustainable practices in our communities. In addition, adopting simple habits such as reducing energy consumption, recycling and using public transport can reduce our individual environmental footprint. Informing and raising awareness of those around us is also crucial. By participating in awareness-raising activities, we can inform our local community about the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable practices. Every little effort counts, and together we can make a difference for a more sustainable future.
