Do you know your rights?

  • “Sometimes children in Afghanistan cannot go to school, for safety reasons” →  Did you know that according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children have the right to go to school? In each country the State has to take measures to ensure that children go to school and do not drop out. [article 28]
  • “I asked the teacher to explain something in English. He answered: “This is my country, this is my city, this is my class. You have to learn Greek!”. → Did you know that according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children and young people who belong to a minority group have the right to profess and practice their own culture, language and religion? They also have the right to equal opportunities in education. [article 28 and 30]
  • “People on the street make comments on the fact that I wear a hijab”  →  Did you know that according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have the right to think freely, to believe in a religion and to express themselves freely by any means, provided they do not disrespect others? [article 13 and 14]
  • “There are some topics that children are forbidden to discuss or  ask about, such as relationships, sex or other religions.”  Did you know that according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children have the right to express their views freely on all matters affecting them? [article 12]
  • “Children do not have time to play, because they have many obligations outside school and then they have to do their homework!” → Did you know that according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child all children have the right to free time, play, entertainment and hobbies? [article 31]
